Think about a word from childhood that has special significance because you have either a positive or negative association with it. How did you learn it? How did it become more significant than other words? A special word from my childhood was “critter”. Growing up in California, there would always be tiny, black, bugs that crawled around the wall around my preschool. I used to call them “roly poly’s” but later I found most people called them pillbugs, or woodlice. The roly poly’s were the size and shape of a pill, hence the name pillbugs, and had a shell over there bodies like an armadillo. If you stuck your finger out, they’d climb onto it and tickle you with fourteen of their tiny feet. I most likely learned the word critter from the kids
