During the time that Adolf Hitler was in power in Nazi Germany, there were many conflicting beliefs. Almost all Nazi members seemed to be believe that Hitler’s plan to exterminate all Jews and other similarly rooted groups (or “Final Solution”) was something that would help the world. This possibly stemmed from Hitler’s blame of the Jews for the causation of previous events (like economical crises in the country and more notably the German loss of World War I), effectively using them as a scapegoat for all of Germany’s prior issues. Hitler himself had begun despising Jewish people when he was a struggling painter in Vienna in his earlier years. Some that defied Hitler even went out of their way to purchase goods exclusively at Jewish shops. Others refused to participate in the boycotting of public Jewish places and even hid Jews to protect them from being captured by the Nazi regime. Ultimately, however, Germans that approved of Jews backed down due to peer pressure and professional as well as social disadvantages. However, I don’t think they knew exactly how horrifying the plan was until it was much too late. In addition, some individuals likely knew more about the plan than others did or than they cared to let on. By the start of World War II in 1939, Hitler’s plan to ostracize and eliminate Jewish people from Europe was extremely obvious. While many Germans and non-Jews from most other countries in Eastern Europe were extremely eager to help the Nazi party in the mass genocide of Jews, some citizens remained more silent on the topic. Some people denied the whole issue; this still continues nowadays, though it is illegal to deny Hitler’s “Final Solution” in most countries. Others appeared to avoid learning about the details of “The Final Solution” and in some countries very few people were even aware of the plan.
