It was Finny’s fault of falling off the tree and shattering his leg. Even if Gene did make Finny lose his balance accidently, it was Finny who suggested to do a double jump off of the tree.
In the story, it states that “ “We’ll go together, a double jump! Neat, eh?” ” (28) This is what Finny says as they arrive to the tree. Because of Finny always overpowering or controlling Gene ever since they first met, Gene follows Finny in his actions.
