Fundamentally, the term virginity had various definitions in the historic cultures and religions. According to Kyung Lo, a woman’s purity was judged based of that individual’s morality. In the Buddhist culture during the mid-imperial era in China, the concept of “pure body” of a women was linked to her rectitude (Keung Lo 24). Therefore, physical virginity was never concerned for the women because losing one’s virginity before their marriage was considered improper during this specific time period in China. However, there were certain situations where sex was appropriate, such as after marriage. Hence, the concept of virginity and its rules were followed very strictly. Hinduism is very much similar to Buddhism when it comes to beliefs. Personally, I have learned that the Hindu culture and religion have placed priority to maintain abstinence till marriage for the basic reasons of health and a healthy marriage. Also, in this culture, women who had pre-marital sex were usually set aside by the community or often were looked down upon. As an attempt of research, it was very shocking to see there were few to no results involving how Hinduism plays a role in virginity. However, it is important to also note that pre-marital sex is commonly practiced by Hindus. According to Adhikari and Tamang, pre-marital sex is common around college going students who have a “liberal attitude about the opposite sex’s virginity.” Having a liberal attitude about one’s virginity is defined as “disagreeing to the statement: women should be virgins at marriage” (Adhikari and Tamang 4). Similarly, another study also addresses this instance of more pre-marital sex in the Hindu culture and religion.
