Researchers have used fMRI experiments to show that there are brain activations in a human that precede the conscious decision just by several seconds. People have used these studies as scientific evidence that free will is basically an illusion. The experiments show that not only are decisions made before we're conscious of having made them, but that the brain can predict our decisions. We like to think that our conscious selves make decisions, but in fact the choices appear to have been made by our own brains, without our consent or knowledge. This clearly brings about obvious implications for the notion of “freedom of the will”. In this essay he is particularly concerned whether free will is compatible with determinism. He breaks down the possible views on free will in to three options: freedom and determinism are incompatible, freedom and determinism are compatible, and denying free will as a whole. Van Inwagen maintains the idea that each of these three positions faces difficulties, or as he puts it, involves a mystery of some sort. He believes that one should favor the position that involves the least difficulties. Frankfurt begins his essay by affirming the idea that the structure of our will, in particular our ability to form second-order desires, makes up one’s personhood. This is what distinguishes us humans from other creatures. Frankfurt describes first-order desires as a desire to perform an action.
