The students will understand what a word study is through learning about compound words. Word study provides students with opportunities to investigate and understand the patterns in words. Word studies are often applied to reading, and can help enhance students’ reading, spelling, comprehension, word recognition, and phonics skills. This is important for students so they can become better readers. The students’ vocabularies will grow when they can understand and define compound words. The students will be able to identify the two root words joined together to form a new word with a new meaning. In the next lesson, the students will understand how to make text to text connections. Text to text connections allow students to gain a deeper understanding of a text when they make connections. Good readers make connections to better understand what they are reading. According to Zimmerman (2000), “Good readers constantly try to make sense out of what they read by seeing how it fits with what they already know. When we help students make those connections before, during, and after they read, we are teaching them a critical comprehension strategy that the best readers use almost unconsciously.” A text to text connection is a connection that is made between two books or texts that you have read. Text to text connections can be made by comparing characters, personalities, actions, and story events. Text to text connections can be made by the theme or message the author is trying to convey. We can even make text to text connections by comparing different versions of the same story. This is important so students can take their prior knowledge of a book they already read to apply it to another book.
