Trajan’s column can be found in the Forum Romanum located in Rome, Italy. A Greek architect and engineer by the name of Apollodorus of Damascus built it around the year 113 AD. The monument was financed by the Roman Empire and was constructed to memorialize the conquests of Emperor Trajan during the Dacian Wars. The monument consists of a 100-foot tall marble column placed upon a massive rectangular base. Spiraling twenty three times from the bottom to the top is a series of low-relief scenes that depict the different battles and generals involved in the conflict. If placed on the ground, the entire frieze would be nearly 700 feet long. Themes of the victory and triumph of the Roman civilization run throughout the entire column. Romans are
