Gender/Feminist Criteria • The representation of men and women in the text • The relationships between men and women during the time of the text • The facts of the author’s life relate to the presentation of men and women Example Scout nearly starts a fight at school with another classmate named Cecil Jacobs after Cecil insults her father. Scout's father Atticus is a lawyer who is defending a black man, Tom Robinson, therefore his receiving criticism from everyone in the town. (In the school playground, Cecil declares, “‘Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers'" (Lee 75). Jem slams Scout for acting like a girl when she refuses to participate in the, ‘Boo Radley Game’. The kids try to play a game to imitate the life of recluse man, Boo Radley. The boys do not let Scout play the 'dangerous' game as she is a female. (Jem exclaims, "‘Scout, I’m telling you for the last time, shut your trap or go home-I declare to the lord you’re gettin’ more like a girl everyday’” (Lee 52). Meaning This event reveals how scout, by imitating a fight, she goes against the rolls of women were expected to act in the 1960’s. A lady would have taken the insult and not pay much attention to the remark, but scout defies this and takes the roll of a male Scout is discriminated for acting like a girl even though she is one. The Cunningham is in the working class in which is characterized by low income, unemployment, and jobs that require physical labour.
