The Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was brought into law on July 2, 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson declaring once and for all discrimination for any reason on the basis of race; sex, color, religion or national origin was illegal in the United States. The Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 law is considered to be one of the most important laws written. The Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 outlawed discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin as well as required equal access to public places and employment, and enforced desegregation of schools and gave people of color the right to vote. Before the Title VII law became a law it allowed for employers to be able to reject a job applicant because of his or her race, religion, sex or national origin. At one time or another an employer could turn down an employee for a promotion, decide not to give him or her a particular assignment or in some other way discriminate against that person because he or she was black or white, Jewish, Muslim or Christian, a man or a woman or Italian, German or Swedish and it would all be considered legal. The main purpose was to ensure that everyone that is employed by any business or company had an equal opportunity of getting a job or having the opportunity of being promoted at work.
