Jack, the main character of This Boys Life by Tobias Wolff, lives a depressing life. This is shown throughout the book, whether by Jack growing up without a father, or being betrayed by people he is close to, like Dwight. Throughout the book, the betrayal Jack faces, the symbolism of cigarettes, and the meaning of his stories of being someone else support the theme of using imagination to find ones own identity and make life more worthwhile. One motif of the theme is the betrayal Jack endures throughout the book.
