Even though it took the actions of the police force and federal government to officially bring an end to graft, there were many political machines that were able to pull of some major fraud and crimes. One of the most notorious incorporated the Tweed Ring, which was led by Boss Tweed between the years 1869 and 1871. They were a group of corrupt officials that were part of the most powerful political machine within New York City. The biggest scheme that they managed to pull off was the building of the New York Country Courthouse. The construction was overcharged by 10 million dollars, where the extra money was pocketed and distributed among the Tweed ring. It was not until 1871 that cartoonist, Thomas Nast, unveiled the graft they had committed
