The narrating portrait, Sharon Olds, describes/ discusses the obvious contrasts between her and the other starring portrait. In her poem, she uses mainly metaphors and similes when stating contrasts she noticed during her experience. From the start of the poem, she first goes in describing differences in tangible items like clothes as she goes on she gets into the more socio-economical differences between the two. When first assessing the portrait, she used a metaphor if you would, calling themselves “molecules stuck in a rod light rapidly moving through darkness” She then continued to use some stereotypical judgment describing him as a mugger, in his “red, hooded lids” and herself as a harmless woman of sorts with a fur coat.
