There were five major film studios that had the most wealth and control in the “Golden Age of Hollywood.” These studios were 20th Century Fox, RKO Pictures, Paramount Pictures, Warner Bros., and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. This is what is known as the studio system. The studio system refers to when a small number of studio's controls the film production and distribution. There were other studios but none quite as powerful or with the amount of money the big five were capable of. Notably, there were also “the little three.” These consisted of Universal Studios, Columbia Pictures, and United Artists. The five main studios reigned for a number of years dominating the industry. They kept a tight leash on their assets which included stars and directors.
