Have you ever had to depend on the future to determine the outcome of your health? Alzheimer’s is portrayed through a documentary The Memory Loss Tapes that follows the lives of seven individuals with the disease in the advancing state of the dementia process from when it was at its earliest detectable stage. Alzheimer’s which is “The most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's disease is irreversible and destroys brain cells, causing thinking ability and memory to deteriorate. Alzheimer's disease is not a normal part of aging” (Alzheimer Society of Canada 2011). Bessie Knapmiller, 87 is the first individual introduced in the documentary she is in the first two months of being diagnosed and is exhibiting signs of memory loss. Joe realizes that he has a memory issue he even shares with the viewers that he gets lost in his own yard and forgets what he’s doing he fears going to grocery stories because he has had moments were he just went to his mailbox and forgot to return home. His memory loss is no secret to him he even takes his grand daughter to the park and forgets were they are he informs the viewers “luckily she knew were we were going because I forgot” she takes his hand and leads them back to home. He identifies his disease with a person cutting meat with a meat slicer but in his case someone slicing off parts of his memory and chuckling. Mr. Potocny has no hope and is always speaking about his death, which upsets his wife, and he gets humor out of it sometimes he feels she just being a pest he ends is story with a letter to his family informing them of basically his acceptance of his state and what to do in the end with him. Yolanda Santomartino, 75 diagnosed 6 years ago living in a nursing home identifies with a mirror and she thinks that her mirrored reflection is her “best friend” and imaginary snakes that crawl are haunting her over her wheelchair. The nurses in the nursing home take care of Yolanda and when she’s upset over these snakes they kill them for her and protects her. Her son Roberto is introduced towards the end of her story and she introduces him as a dear friend, which upset him in a way his mother doesn’t look at him as her child. Woody Geist, 81 fourteen years ago has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s he no longer has recollection of who his family is he can steal take over the spot light through when he performs with his local vocal group in public.
