Martian vs. Martian There were many differences between the book and movie versions of The Martian. One of the differences was the way the story was told. The book starts out with Mark Watney’s log describing how his crew left him alone on Mars and how he has to try to figure out how to survive. Later on, the author describes how the crew had to leave Watney behind from a third person point of view. On the other hand, the movie is told in chronological order from the time that Watney is deserted. This change was probably made to give more of an impact on the beginning of the movie. The main difference in the two versions is the way the ending played out. In the book, Beck gets Watney safely back into Hermes without having to cut his tether
