In India, 2007 and 2008, there were an estimated 22,800 robberies, 32,700 murders, 44,100 sexual assaults and 270,800 serious assaults. In the United States of America, there were an estimated 380,600 suicide attempts in 2007 alone. Conflict is often generalized and classified into two different types; internal and external. Internal conflict is the struggle within ones self and external conflict is the battle between outside forces. For example, internal conflict may be contemplating and weighing the pros and cons of killing someone and external conflict would be actually committing the murder. This is evident in many chapters, parts of the book, and within many characters, but the chapters that will be discussed are The Monkey Garden, No Speak English and Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes. Firstly, in the chapter The Monkey Garden, Esperanza feels very helpless when the boys take Sally’s keys and she goes with them to get the keys back by kissing them. She feels so conflicted because she wants to help, and even goes to an adult- Tito’s mom- but she refuses to help saying that “Boys will be boys”. After attempting to help her, it becomes obvious that Sally doesn’t want Esperanza’s help. In No Speak English, the character Mamacita experiences internal conflict when she feels homesick and depressed because she longs for her home country. She has been moved by her husband to a foreign country where she doesn’t speak their language and doesn’t know anyone. In Mango Says Goodbye Sometimes, Esperanza dreams of leaving Mango Street and having a house of her own with her own things. Esperanza yearns for freedom but feels anchored in the sense that she must come back for those who cannot leave.
