After little sleep, Perceval wakes, still furious at Ulrich. During an outdoor training session with the other knights and a recovering King Arthur, Perceval and Ulrich come to blows. Outraged by their behavior, King Arthur sends the men to Queen Guinevere and instructs the two knights that whatever punishment the queen deems suitable, they will abide by. A disappointed Guinevere sentences Ulrich to two nights in the dungeons for actively pursuing a married woman, and threatens her old friend Perceval that should he raise a hand to Ulrich again without good cause, he’ll find himself in the dungeons as well. During this exchange, a courtier bursts in and explains Joan is sick and bleeding. Perceval rushes to his wife, but is stopped in the corridor by the midwife, who explains Joan is recovering, but her pregnancy is gone. They throw a surprise supper party for Merlin at the Cup and Sword Tavern. Merlin is overcome but grateful, and says to Perceval: “You know this is only the beginning don’t you?” The book ends with Perceval’s final thoughts: It was a vague statement, but Perceval understood what Merlin meant. Their futures, all intertwined, would be filled with trials and adversity, but hope and love, too. Perceval glanced to his right and his gaze settled on his wife. With the woman he loved and his dear friends at his side, anything seemed possible. This ending leads the reader into the second book, where Ulrich and Carina prepare for their wedding, and Perceval and Joan set off for a short seaside honeymoon, with unexpected, disastrous results.
