In this short story, “The Experience Machine” author Robert Nozick argues about hedonism and comes to an objection. His story talks about how he creates a machine which will let you experience any desire you will like. You are basically strapped into a machine and laid down, as I would think Nozick puts a helmet on you so your brain can be controlled. With that being said, the machine is now reading your most desire thoughts and you are probably thinking about becoming the richest person on the planet or maybe becoming the smartest human being. It is anything that you desire the most and have always dreamed of. He says that if all we do is value the experience, then we would actually be willing to be strapped up to the experience machine. So that is one of the premises that could be true, but then there others that wouldn’t be willing to get strapped up to the machine and spend the rest of their lives in the experience machine. So therefore, we don’t all value experience. Now if most people were unwilling to get strapped up into the machine and spend the rest of their lives there, then we would find tons of people and evidence of them dashing the experience machine and little proof of the people who are actually willing to use the experience machine. Nonetheless, we find that people are actually the complete opposite, as in them actually wanting to try out the experience machine and little proof of them dashing away from the machine. For that reason, there isn’t enough proof that everyone is afraid of spending the rest of their lives on the machine. So this whole story is briefly explaining to us how this machine is just a made up story or idea that the hedonist would obey. In the other hand another person would see the breakdown of only having pleasure to them. They would dodge any pain or anything that will not give them pleasure and feel that pleasure is the only good
