Actually, with the ladies conversation, there is now more insight into who the breadwinner is in their relationships. When talking about the Petrified Man, Leota says, "All Fred does is lay around the house like a rug," which hints at Fred not working while comparing him to Mr. Petrie’s character at the freak show(734). Though later on, it is confirmed that he and even Mrs. Pike's husbands are unemployed when Leota mentions that both do not have job while discussing her "bad luck" (378).
