Friendship is a relationship between two people who care about each other. In both The Book Thief by Marcus Zusak and The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare, there are characters that defend and support their friends even though they may encounter troubles from others in society. Three great examples of this are: Antonio agrees to a bond for Bassanio, Hans and Rosa hide Max in their basement and Liesel and Rudy give bread to the Jews. To begin, Antonio agrees to a bond for Bassanio. Bassanio needs money to get to Venice to marry Portia so he asks Antonio for the money. Antonio borrows the money from Shylock, but he makes a bond that says if he doesn’t return the money on time he gets to cut off a pound of flesh. Shylock shows kindness
