We all know Thanksgiving as the public holiday in Canada. Schools are closed and most people have the day off work. We all know each year on the second Monday in October we take that day to give thanks, but do we know why? On January 31, 1957, a proclamation was put in force stating “Thanksgiving was to be A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed.” The Native people of the Americas held festivals to celebrate the completion of harvest before European Explorers and settlers came to what is now Canada.
