Blood is pumping through Delia Jones as she makes a life or death decision of whether or not to let her husband die by the mighty jaws of a rattlesnake. “Sweat” is a short story by Zora Neale Hurston that shows the transformation of how an underdog, Delia jones, can become a hero and stand up for herself through symbolism. Hurston shows transformation step by step from when she described the droopiness of her shoulders to her ignoring the screams of her husband Sykes while watching the sunrise. In the beginning while she is washing clothes for the white folks, Sykes catches her by surprises dropping his bullwhip upon her shoulders causing her to freeze represents the fear he puts onto her when he aggresses her verbally and physically.
