Kristin Swanson found there to be a lack of true definition of the concept of caring in nursing (Swanson, 1991, p.161). Due to this lack of a definition of the vital nursing concept, Swanson began to develop her theory of caring. Swanson (1991) defines caring as “a nurturing way of relating to a valued other toward whom one feels a personal sense of commitment and responsibility” (p.165).
