Superintendent Zeff: Throughout the recent years, multiple books have been challenged as to whether they should be available to students to read in school or not due to their violent or explicit content. However, the majority of these books have no reason to remain untouched by our fellow students. Several series and novels such as Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling, Gossip Girl by Cecily von Ziegesar, and Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich have been challenged by parents in different parts of the United States. However, according to the “Top Ten Challenged Books List [from] 2001-2013” by the American Library Association, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins ranks fifth from the top. Challenges to the book include it being unsuitable for certain age groups and references to certain religious viewpoints. On the contrary, positive aspects to the book include using it to encourage social action (Simmons) and teach tweens important life lessons.…show more content…
War, even when deemed necessary and as the last resort, has its drastic consequences (Dockterman) not only on the country itself, but also on the civilians living there. Katniss is a typical teenager, strong and ready to take action yet on the verge of breaking down at any given moment, which is shown through her love for her sister, Primrose, when Katniss“volunteer[ed] as tribute” (Collins 22) for her Prim for the Games. A challenge to the book, which states that the novel is anti-family (Top Ten Frequently Challenged Books), is completely invalidated as Katniss taking care of Prim after their father died and volunteering for her shows that she loves her sister more than anything and is willing to help her survive in any situation, even if it means giving up her
