We discussed some parts of the Shay’s Rebellion in class, but it is in Chapter 8 of the
Jones book. Back in our class discussion, the Massachusetts government Act denied self-
government and “removed democratic elements from a 1691 charter” (Jones, pg. 153). It was
one of the 4 Coercive Acts to punish and isolate Massachusetts in 1774.
In New England basically, according to the text, “powerful merchants retained control
over state assemblies, and resisted public pressure for paper money” (Jones, pg. 203). Paper
money, which was barred by the British government in the early parts of the American
Revolution under the Currency Act of 1764, was on pressure again in the 1780s to demand more
