Everyday for the duration of our existence, many obstacles can allow us to bear the heavy burden of defeat on our shoulders, but through these obstacles it is crucial that we do not allow ourselves to be defeated, but rather learn through our experiences. Maya Angelou was the author of one of my favorite sayings that preaches how essential not being defeated truly is, her words are, “You may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter defeats, so you can know who you are, what you can rise from, how you can still come out of it.” Throughout this essay, I would like to explain what exactly this quote means, why it has an appeal to me, and how it can it can relate to our everyday lives through school. Through her words we can understand that we gain nothing by falling to a level of defeat. To allow ourselves to progress, we must not be distressed over a set back. Through Maya Angelou’s words, it is taught to us that being faced with challenges and not being beaten by them, allows us to genuinely find ourselves as human beings, and demonstrates how mighty we can be through any difficulty. This quote has a certain appeal to me because I believe mankind can connect to its lesson at a deeper more meaningful level. Through any situation, the idea of not being defeated and learning from failures is always evident. Personally, I believe that learning from failures instead of being distraught because of them, is a more effective approach to being a successful and content individual.
