I grew up in a low-income family, and the area was predominantly housing commission. The public school I attended had its fair share of bad press because of student behaviour and other problems. The High School students were classified into three distinct groups; the uncool students who did not achieve good grades;the cool students who did not achieve good grades, and the uncool students who received good grades and were well behaved. I was in the last group, and my friends and I were labelled the one-eighty straighties. I can relate to the American students whose teachers had low expectations of them.
