Steven Church’s 2007 essay, Auscultation, portrays the intimate act of listening, interpreting, and imitating sounds in various instances such as trapped miners, an infant heartbeat monitor, and a visit to the doctor’s office. Church uses these examples in order to illustrate that something as simple as speech or sound is neglected, but continues to be a beautiful gift in everyday life in which should not be overlooked.
