Stark argues that the reason Muslim armies were finally able to defeat the crusaders was simply that the knights that stayed to defend the crusader kingdoms were few, and Europe stopped giving the financial support the nights needed. The result was that the knights were severely outnumbered and no help was coming. Muslim armies would bring tens of thousands of soldiers to fight against several hundred knights. Even though the knights consistently inflicted massive casualties on the Muslim attackers, such vast difference in numbers contributed largely to the Crusaders eventual loss. The sultans only had to send wave after wave of their men into battle, and eventually the knights would get either overrun, or would be too tired to keep swinging
