Social Control What would you do if someone constantly controlled you, but not just you, what if they controlled every single aspect of your life and of the lives of the people you love? Well, I know that's a simple answer; most, if not all of you would break loose of those chains, right? But, what if you liked it? What if you like being controlled, what if it was pleasant and you couldn’t imagine living without those chains? Mrs. Sexsmith and fellow classmates, today I will be proposing to you a question some of you may have never asked yourselves, or one rather difficult to ask. In To Kill a Mockingbird, the laws of that time were used to control the people that had the power to make a change. Social pressure was placed upon those who rebelled and tried to help the oppressed, and the supposed 'Science' of the time approved the actions of the oppressors. At times laws and justice have distorted the citizens' minds to a superiority complex making them believe that the 'others' were not considered as one of their own and even justifying the act of murdering them as a good to everyone else, just like in Night. Laws serve to keep order and they should maintain equality and finally we're reaching a point where equality is being reached, yet there still remain issues to be resolved like equal pay for all genders and ages, and even if we don't like to admit it, that will take long to be resolved as long as greedy corporations and politicians stay in power and serve their pockets from our money. Robert Kennedy declared, "Every society gets the kind of criminal it deserves. What is equally true is that every community gets the kind enforcement it insists on."
