Throughout both texts some characters are underpinned by societal values, however this cannot be argued for all them as several characters represent different concepts while others challenge the prevalent system in place. 'A Week in December' appears to have more of an intention to explore society as John Veals and Hassan are exploited by Faulks to represent the extremes of modern life in the western world: greed, hatred and identity. The minor characters in 'Snow falling on Cedars' represent prejudice experienced throughout America during the 1950's, however Ishmael Chambers symbolises an entirely different struggle of war, loss and acceptance, lessening this impact.
