Often Smeagol is considered evil, but what is not thought of most often is who Smeagol was when he had the Ring, also when the Ring was lost from him. Some of the reasons are, Smeagol couldn’t have been evil before he knew about the Ring. Another point that is mostly reflected upon is, Smeagol is evil because he killed Deagol. With one final point which is, it was never Smeagol it was the Ring and the Ring left a little bit of itself behind. Smeagol is not evil, he was overpowered by the Ring. Smeagol couldn’t have been evil when he didn’t even know about the Ring. In the book The Fellowship Of The Ring Smeagol is a Hobbit that was curious and liked shiny things.“The most inquisitive and curious-minded of that family was called Smeagol” (Tolkien 57). This proves that before Deagol found the Ring Smeagol was just a regular Hobbit that had his hobbies. “He was interested in roots and beginnings; he dived into deep pools; he burrowed under trees and growing plants; he tunnelled into green mounds; and he ceased to look up at the hill-tops, or the leaves on trees, or the flowers opening in the air: his head and eyes were downward”(Tolkien 57). With this information it proves that Smeagol was not evil before he had the Ring.…show more content…
