Situational irony happens when events in a story are the opposite of what the reader or character expects to happen. For example, one time I went to a horse show and I felt very well prepared, but my horse ended up being hurt. Also, in the story "Thank you M'am", a young African boy tries to steal a purse from an African American woman. He thinks she will bring him to jail, but she helps him instead. In the short story "The Necklace", we learned that Mathilde borrowed a fake necklace from a very rich friend which she thought was real. In the story, "Helmets" Wilton believed a family wore helmets to protect themselves from an explosion, but the family wore helmets because their young son had a physical disability. They didn't want him to feel different so they all wore helmets. Many authors use situational irony to create a more dramatic story.…show more content…
A large woman was walking alone, in the streets at night, when a boy ran up behind her and tried to snatch her purse. Unexpectedly the strap of the purse broke with the single tug of the boy. His weight and the weight of the purse combined caused him to lose his balance so, instead of taking off full blast as he had hoped, the boy fell on his back on the sidewalk. Then the large woman reached down, and picked the boy up by his shirt.
