Themes in Literature can be difficult to detect. Especially, when some seem to be so similar. Text from the sixties, eighties, and nineties have a lot of things that are similar. The poem “We Wear the Mask” and “Richard Cory” are all about society. It has a lot of different messages and they are both alike and different to each other. The messages even though these were written a long time ago, still apply today. It shows society never really changes, they will always have the same view.
“We Wear the Mask” is a poem about how, people walk around, metaphorical speaking, with a mask on their face. They don’t show there true feelings when they are sad. People laugh and play around even if they might have a bad life or something horrible happened. It is just easier that way than to express yourself to others who will not comprehend your pain. “We Wear the Mask” is similar to “Richard Cory” because he wears a mask in this poem. He doesn’t show everyone what he really feels. In this poem Cory has everything, or so the people say, he has admirers, money, looks, and is genuinely a nice man. Everyone wants to be him, but in the end of the day, he kills himself. He proved he had a mask. He never had love, which is one thing people cannot live without. He hides his pain and he’s really good at it till he puts a gun to his head.…show more content… You can walk by the street and you don’t know if that person’s parents just got in a car crash, or there husband, wife, siblings, or best friend just died. Or what if they just found out they had terminal cancer? People hid their pain behind a mask, a happy mask. “Richard Cory” was an individual person, and everyone looked up to him. The poor “cursed their bread” and it just showed that everyone has a mask. Richard was not happy because he had no love. The poor were not happy because they had no wealth.
