Out of all the sections that I have read In my literature class the one section that taught me the greatest lesson that is most necessary to understanding American literature is the father and son section, because this section allows you to think outside of the box and, really leaves you analyzing the stories, and gives you different points of view to look at. Although a lot other sections we read other authors have done some of the same things I believe Arthur Miller, and Theodore Roethke did it the best, because they left room for questioning and it has different points of views. This story is about a father named Willy who is trying to force his son Biff to become a salesman and get him his own business. Biff didn’t really know what he wanted to do in life but he just did what made him happy at the time. Throughout the play there were times when I had to look back in the reading and question why? Something happened, and had many different answers depending on how you looked at the text the view of the father for example why Willy goes from saying “Biff is a lazy bum” (Arthur Miller, Death of a Salesman Act 1,) (Pg.241) then eventually goes on to say that he’s lost and that he’s not lazy. You could argue that something was wrong with the father mentally. Also you could say that maybe he just wanted what was best for his son, but one of the questions I asked was why he talked down to his son if he wanted what was best for him. Another example is at the end of the play when Willy killed his self at the end after Biff expressed his how he felt to him I had to look at the overall story that has so many angles and tried to figure out why? If he loved his son like he said he did wouldn’t he accept him for who he is? Arthur Miller gave a lot of these examples of having different points of view and also showing the American culture when it came to fathers and sons and how the fathers wanted the sons to follow in their
