A Comparison Between “A Celebration of Grandfathers” and “The Teacher Who Changed My Life.”
”A Celebration of Grandfathers” by Rudolfo A. Anaya and “The Teacher Who Changed My Life” by Nicholas Gage incorporate many of the same ideas, such as how the characters develop who they are in present times. Both authors have unique background scenarios with Nicholas Gage coming from Greece and Rudolfo Anaya coming from New Mexico. The similarities lie in writing about their heritage and how they become who they are today. Although the “Celebration of Grandfathers” and “The Teacher Who Changed My Life” both incorporate tragedy shaping identity, they contrast in how life lessons are conveyed to the main character, and why each author chose to write their story.…show more content… In “The Teacher Who Changed My Life”, Nicolas Gage lost his mother at nine years old. It was later in grade school when his English teacher convinced him to write about his grief. This lead to him receiving many awards and recognitions, as well as, steered him towards his passion for writing which he continues to execute today. Similarly, author of “A Celebration of Grandfathers”, Rudolfo A. Anaya, experiences an event that causes great distress during his childhood when his friend was killed. Anaya’s grandfather helps him overcome his sorrow with short, powerful phrases that Anaya uses to enhance his writing as he progresses into his career. Later after his grandpa passes, he exemplifies his interpretation of his grandfather’s wisdom by expressing, “These lessons he learned from his past, which was as deep and strong as the currents of the river of life, a life which could be stronger than death” (Anaya 459).
