Senni Young agrees that making a wrong assumption can cause pain and suffering to anyone, and now more than ever since we constantly make assumptions about others based on their appearance and first impression. There were many times that I heard someone say something about me that was not true. I never pay attention to these comments and seem careless about it. Perhaps, I cannot make the whole world satisfied. Until one day, that assumption was made by a Japanese girl with her action, assuming that I am an imbecile person.
When I first came to the United States, my English was just terrible. I was not be able to pronoun so well except for these simple words such as “Yes” or “No”. I didn’t notice that I had dropped my taps card along the way when I dragged myself to the bus station. As we waited for the bus, the Japanese girl, who is a native English speaker came toward me. She handed me my tap card and asked “Is this yours?” In my mind, I was so glad and thankful that she found it. Just when I was about to say thank you, and get my tap card back, something very strange happened that left me dumbfounded. She threw my tap card about 5 feet away from where I stood and ran away. I didn’t want to believe what just happened but then I realized she was making fun of me when I noticed that she was laughing at me after I looked up from picking up my card. After that I kept asking myself “Why did they do that to me?” and “How in the world was people like that?” Yes, I was careless for dropping my card and yes, I didn’t speak English that well, but that didn’t mean that I was stupid.
