BeyoncéGiselle Knowles-Carter (Beyonce), 33, was born in Houston, Texas, to Matthew and Tina Knowles. Beyonce has one sister Solange Knowles, who we have heard of recently due to the elevator incident with Bey’s husband Jay Z.
As a child Beyoncé loved to sing and dance. She competed in a number of competitions and a majority of the time she would come out successful. It wasn’t until she was 16 that she became noticed, as the lead singer of R&B girl group Destiny's Child.
Destiny’s Child consisted of Beyoncé Knowles, Kelly Rowland, LeToya Luckett and LaTavia Roberson. Destinys Child originated from Girls Tyme. Beyonce met LaTavia Roberson and formed Girls Tyme after an audition for a girl group in 1990. Two years later Kelly Rowland joined Girls Tyme after moving in to Beyoncé’s home, due to family issues.
In the early stages of their career the girl group changed their name 4 times, to: Something Fresh, Cliché, the Dolls, and to Destiny.
It wasn’t until 1996 that the group changed their name to Destiny's Child. After the fantastic success of their first album, the girls quickly returned to the studio to record their next album “The Writings on the Wall”, released on the 27th of July 1999. The song “Bills, Bills, Bills” from the album “The Writings on the Wall” reached number one on the Billboard Top 100, being their first ever US number one single. The other single that was a breakthrough for Destiny’s Child was “Say My Name”. This single topped the Billboard Top 100 for three consecutive weeks. Thanks to their success with these singles the album sold over eight million copies in the US giving the album eight-time platinum
