I chose the Santorini Volcano because I have always wanted to travel to Greece, Santorini in particular. Santorini is part of the Cyclades island group, which is located just off of Greece’s mainland. The Santorini Volcano is a complex stratovolcano, which is a volcano built up of alternate layers of lava and ash. This volcano type is a shield volcano and it is currently dormant. The Santorini Volcano is mainly explosive, with some effusive activity during intervals. More powerful explosive eruptions occur every 10,000 to 30,000 years and smaller explosive activity occurs during interval times. This volcano has erupted in 197 BC, 46/47 AD, 726, 1570-1573, 1707-1711, 1866-1870, 1925-1928, 1939-1941, and 1950. In 1613 BC, give or take seven years,…show more content… This eruption came to be known as the “Minoan eruption”. There is tons of evidence on the island of the eruptions from the volcano. Most of the volcanic layers can be seen on the inner walls of the caldera. The caldera is large and sea-flooded and it was created by several large explosive eruptions. Some evidence of the 1650 BC eruption found by scientists is a white layer from the Minoan tephra. The tephra is volcanic fragments that are ejected explosively from a volcano. The Minoan tephra consists of pumice, pyroclastic surge, and pyroclastic flow deposits. More evidence of another eruption from the Santorini Volcano shows that about 3-6 feet of ash fell on a Minoan city called Akroteri. This city had a population of about 30,000 people. No bodies were found during the excavation of this city so all the people seem to have been evacuated. Archaeologists also found that movable objects were taken from this city, so the people left with some of their belongings prior to the eruption. The most recent eruption from the volcano was in 1950. This eruption lasted less than a
