Saint Augustine sought to “marry” Christianity and platonic philosophy. Christianity was, at the time, more historically based than anything; it involved believing in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, and living how God, who created us, would have wanted. This meant that Christianity provided a good deal of moral instruction, but didn’t dwell much on discussing philosophical questions, such as “What is the nature of reality?” Saint Augustine wanted Platonism to be absorbed into the Christianity because he felt it could answer such questions as “What is the nature of reality?”; the questions that the bible didn’t concern itself with.
