On September 24th, Curt Storlazzi, USGS Research Geologist and Oceanographer gave a public lecture on Coral Reefs, Climate Change, and Atoll Sustainability. The lecture lasted about an hour and seven minutes and was held in Menlo, California. Mr. Storlazzi showed how climate change and sea level rise in the western Pacific Ocean is damaging to these islands. Storlazzi addressed how climate change is degrading the coral reefs. Furthermore, he spoke on how the atoll islands have developed upon, decreasing the reef’s ability to reduce wave energy and thus wave-driven island flooding. Mr. Storlazzi and his large research team are studying these events so they can tell the “tipping points”-when islands are no longer habitable. Mr. Storlazzi, use
