In Lawrence Graham’s article, “The ‘Black Table’ Is Still There”, rhetorical questions are used to spark the cause portion of this cause and effect style. Graham explains his old middle schools ritual of lunchtime, including the table where all the black students sat (except for himself who refused to “segregate”) he starts to wonder why he would never sit with them and follows by asking questions in frustration: “What was wrong with me?”, “What was I afraid of?”, “What was I thinking?”. One may find these questions to be simple on the surface, easily formatted, but once one tries to answer the question it appears to be more complex, the answer will reveal the cause of the “Black Table”.
