I learned many things about the civil war during this brief history lesson of ours, but, by far the most shocking to me was that most of the men didn't die from bullets. They died from exposure. (Helm) The lives of these mean revolved solely on actually surviving instead of fighting in the war. Because of poor personal hygiene these men were riddled with various diseases, and an unmentionable amount of fleas, lice, and ticks. These conditions extended to both sides of the war, although the Union had a much better ration than the South. An estimated amount of 450,000 soldiers died due to weather conditions and medical conditions and or deficiencies caused by their poor diet and hygiene.
