What is Red Ribbon week? Red Ribbon week is one of the largest drug prevention programs that is celebrated by schools all over our nation today.
How did it begin? Red Ribbon week began in 1985 when an undercover Drug Enforcement Agent, Enrique Camarena was kidnapped tortured and murdered during an investigation against the Mexican drug cartel. Carmarena’s hometown started a club called the “Carmarena Club” in order to educate the community about drugs and fight against the use of drugs. Everyone in this club wore a Red Ribbon to honor this heroes death and his fight against drugs. This later became a tradition that grew and is celebrated for one week in October, from October 23rd through the 31st.
