The book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking by Susan Cain tells the story of the importance of introverts in society. The book talks about many different aspects of introverts, but my favorite topics were when Cain described the rise of extroverts in society, how introverts are amazing leaders, and when she explained the difference between the minds of introverts and extroverts. Around the turn of the 20th century, America was starting to move from their small towns and farms to big cities, which created a big shift in society. In the rural areas, people used to have family and close friends as neighbors who would help them out, and everyone in the town would share and help one another. In the urban cities that people moved to, they now had to focus on how they presented themselves to others, as now they had they worked and lived next to strangers. People became much less concerned with their character and became obsessed with having the best personality, and, in order to become the most likable, people needed to become more extroverted. As an introvert, I used to think I was limited by my quietness and from not showing my emotions. I now realize that my introvertedness can actually propel me into having a better life. My quietness allows me to hear others and by keeping my emotions under control I can better understand others, and those are just a few of the strengths I discovered. This book will help counselors better understand how to help introverted patients and how to help parents who worry about how quiet their children are.
