Pseudogymnoascus destructans or P. destructants is an infection found predominantly in chiropteran ecology, otherwise known as bats, which is a main cause of white-nose syndrome (WNS) a fungus that primarily effects the population of bats in North America. However, in Europe there is no apparent population change in the quantity of bats since the disease, therefore it is essential to conduct an experiment regarding several different species of bats that may be in the risk of infection by studying their hibernation stage and whether they are in the range of P. destructants. WNS is a disease associated with skin infection that leads to skin damage and also relates to affects the bat’s mortality rate. The skin disease is transmitted through either…show more content…
This host-pathogen dynamic resembles the pathogen’s ability (P. destructants) to infect and the host’s ability (bat) to resist being infected. One of the main questions concerning this experiment is whether the bat will be able to resist the infection and the potential consequences in fungal infection to the environment. The consequences that were caused by the presence of the infection could possibly be an increase in agricultural costs and environmental services and human behavior in terms of insect control. The method used to test the experiment involved capturing the bats at the end of their hibernation season using mist nets and then swabbing the wing membrane to test for fungal presence or fungal growth. Also the wing was furtherly examined by using UV light to detect any lesion of WNS. Any present WNS lesions went under histopathological examinations and…show more content…
The specific results of the experiment conducted were 63 out of the 276 bats were positive for the infections and all contained WNS. These results prove that there is risk for infection in the bat species; however, there is also risk infection in other species that are closely related in the Czech Republic. The results demonstrate that in Europe there is not as much presence of P. destructants in comparison with the bat population in North America where there has been a decline in bat population. In addition, the results prove that the species M. myotis have the highest presence of the skin disease and due to their phylogeny
