Police brutality has always been prevalent in American society and the use of police firearms against people that are unarmed has alarmed the public. In the first month of 2015, there has been nearly 100 suspects killing by police brutality alone; leaving zero officers killed by suspects. Law enforcement in American society has a haunting history of brutality and violations of civil rights. Using Sociology and a blend of Psychology; Patrick F. Parnaby and Sonya Buffone use a modified version of Robert Merton’s model of social structure and anomie to explain the acts of police brutality and deviance. Deviance seem to stem from the anomic social structure because citizens witnessing police misconduct shows that moral and social codes have been abandoned. Citizens are now fearing police force due to the few deviants. Merton explains that there are five forms of deviant adaptations: conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism, and rebellion. Conformity occurs when individuals accept cultural goals and the ways of achieving them. Innovation occurs when an individual accepts the goals of society, but rejects the legitimate way of achieving them. Ritualists accept a lifestyle of hard work, but reject the cultural goal of monetary rewards. Retreatism involves an individual rejecting both cultural goals and legitimate action of achieving it. Finally, rebellion occurs when an individual rejects both culturally defined goals and means and substitute new goals. Merton explains “Unlike conformists who continue to embrace the cultural definition of success while remaining committed to the institutional means, reatreatists, given their perpetual failure to attain success, turn inward while letting the means and goals slip away. The condition officers are faced with are extremely difficult because they must fight crime and keep the public safe with less resources (do more with less). The second issue officers must face is the due process system. Law enforcement may catch criminals in our society, but are faced with the challenge of the justice system.
