“All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” While the quote said by Walt Disney provides encouragement to strive toward reaching our ultimate dreams without regard for success, there remains difficulty in believing dreams can be achieved within the reality we live in. In The Answer to How is Yes by Peter Block, he addresses the question, three qualities, the requirements, and social architecture of striving for our dreams regardless of the societal limitations often presented. One of the most significant qualities is idealism: “…the pursuit of the way we think things should be.” (53). Ultimately, we define our own lives, and the choices we make help determine our future. Now, as we pursue careers within the professional world, idealism “is thought of as weakness—a flaw in perception, an unwillingness or, worse, an incapacity to see the world as it really is.” Generally thought of as a trait of a child, society often looks down upon idealism because of its impracticality. Often, the way we want the world to be significantly differs from the way it actually is. While we may want a higher chance of succeeding within Theatre, the reality is that most of us will not be able to attain the career we pursue. However, one of the most important aspects of Theatre is its improbability and the wonder it provokes. With artistry has to come some form of madness, otherwise how can creative ideas and solutions form? In order to defeat the odds, we must first work against them. Therefore, the right amount of idealism only assists us in the pursuit of a career such as that within Theatre by providing hope within a world that says we have a slim chance of beating the odds. With these inconveniences comes a passion for defeating them, and achieving our ultimate goal to be part of the wonderfully mad world of
