A turning stomach, balmy palms, darting eyes – my nerves manifest themselves as I await the clock to strike eight. The room is lined with uniform rows of desks, each one inhabited by one of my peers. The ACT proctor has informed us to fill out the fifth section: race. This question should be the easiest on the test; however, for me, the girl with beach blonde hair, brown eyes, and white skin, it is most definitely not. I cannot be aptly placed into a single racial category, although I am certain that people walking down the street do not hesitate to label me as “caucasian.” I have yet to witness an expression other than that of surprise upon telling someone that I am half-black.
