For my philanthropic act, I chose to volunteer at a marathon fundraiser my church annually takes parts in. The organization Love146 works to abolish child trafficking and exploitation and hosts the Run, Ride, Walk 4 Love (RRW4L/Ride4Love). Ride4Love was founded to engage the community about trafficking and exploitations, and to raise funds for Love146. There were three rides, two runs/walks, and a kid’s ride. There was 50-mile bike ride, a 30 mile ride, a 15 mile ride, a 10K run/walk, a 5K run/walk, and a Kid’s 1-mile bike ride. My task was simple: I was to direct the 10K runners and the 30 and 50 mile bikers, making sure they were going on the right path. It was a sunny Saturday and we left our apartment around 9:30 am. First we went to the Boston Food Market so my roommates could buy sandwiches, and then we went to Starbucks to get snacks and drinks. When we arrived at the beach, it was slightly crowded. Families were out and about, enjoying the beautiful day. I listened to music, tried to read a book, finished eating my food, enjoyed my roommates company, and got in the water. It was cold at first but once I dunked my body in the water, I was comfortable. When it got really crowded mid-afternoon, we decided to leave, but not before we saw what the park had to offer. There were banana boat rides, fishing holes, paddleboards available, and a hiking trail. We left for home soon after.
Spending the day at the beach was one of the most relaxing days I had. It was exhilarating to just lie down and people-watch, especially the children, who were playing volleyball, making sand castles, or swimming. I had a lot of fun hanging out with my roommates because it was one of the first times we went out and did something fun together since we moved in.
